2019 VSTNT NOR [Notice of Race]

Here is the current NOR for VSTNT 2019:
VSTNT 2019 Notice Of Race PDF File

Please let me know if you see any errors or anything that needs attention.

For convenience here are some highlights in the changes from last year:

We no longer are discussing the 3 minute audible start sequence as PMYC has committed to a RC boat every Tuesday this year with full flags and 5 minute standard starts (section 1 - Rule 26).  If needed we could invoke the audible system again in the SI.

After some discussions with members about the long season and the punitive consequences of missing a race we have added a single exclusion race from each series (section 7).  This will drop the worst result from each series.  This is standard scoring from appendix A and would not require a mention in the NOR but since it was a change it is explicitly stated.

We had some issues and concerns raised last season with boats moving between classes, and so we have tightened up the requirements for boats to be approved before moving classes and clarified that the RC can place a boat in a class if it feels that is necessary.  If you have any question about which class you should be in and why, please discuss it with the RC.

Most of the rest of the NOR is unchanged from last year, many of the details will be further spelled out in each series in the SI.

Also the relationship between ASMBYC and our fleets relationship with PMYC has been moved forward to the point that PMYC is covering the costs of our using the ASMBYC buoys in our races (which is substantial).  As such, PMYC will be the only yacht club acting as on the water RC for us this season.  Please keep in mind this has been an ongoing concern for us as such an inexpensive race that can not afford to cover those costs, and this has evolved into a great symbiotic solution to this issue.

Looking forward to a great year!  See you all at the fleet meeting on Wednesday the 20th.

Joe Cowan's proposal for VSTNT racing in 2019.

joe

VSTNT Proposals for 2019.

1.  Group boats by handicap.    Proposed class splits.  Subject to change because of new PHRF ratings for 2019.  Boats without PHRF handicaps will have one assigned based on PHRF ratings for similar boats.

    Class 1       60 to 119    5 boats
    Class 2        120 to 145           7 boats
    Class 3        146 to 205           4 boats
    Class 4        206 to 270           6 boats

2.  All classes will have adjustable handicaps.

3.  There will be no limit to handicap adjustments.  I call this the “Level Playing Field”    approach.  All handicaps will be adjusted to the average corrected time for each race.

Comments and feedback are welcome.

Joe Cowan

Hi Joe,

I am not sure what this is trying to accomplish, but I will point out some problems with this from my perspective.

The performance fleet boats do not want adjustable handicaps, and several of the boats that were racing in the A fleet at the end of last season were moving to performance to avoid adjustable handicaps.  This year if we change the handicap system it should be in the other direction, not having all classes with adjustments and larger adjustments.  What our races have asked for is the opposite of this.

In the same theme, making all classes having unlimited adjustments is also in the other direction from the feedback I got, this is not what people have been asking for.  The more competitive boats do not want giant handicap adjustments after each race.

We had great results with the handicap system in the B fleet, we had many different winners, and as far as I know nobody wanted anything to change about how the B fleet works.

I am also not aware of anyone wanting to change anything about how the performance class works.

I think the heavily adjusted class, the B class, and the no adjustment fleet, the performance class, are working just fine how they are.

You also would force boats in completely different competition levels into classes with each other with this type of system.  For example, the 146-205 class which you for some reason are saying would be 4 boats (we do not know how many boats these classes would have until we see who signs up to race), but from what I can tell you would have crossfire, and the two solings racing against each other.  This does not make any sense, and I can assure you that is not the class those boats want to be in.

I do not understand what this is attempting to solve, or who it is that is interested in this.  We have a meeting coming up, so we can discuss it then, however with what information I have, I will speak strongly against this kind of change and see no reason for it.  We have been making small adjustments over the last several seasons, and we have come to what I think is a very fun and very competitive system.  These changes do not address any of the concerns I heard from our racers, and would create far more problems than they would solve.

We have been having great success and growth, and there is no reason to make these dramatic and unwise changes.  This would also completely alienate many of the new racers I have been speaking to who are interested in coming to race in our performance class.  If anything, we would gain interest by adding a second fleet with no adjustments in handicaps, however I think this may be premature.

In a more general sense, though I think having 4 classes may make sense at some point, this will create weeks when there are too few boats in a class to be interesting.  If our numbers improve it may make sense to add a 4th class, but I do not think now is the time to do that.

I think this major change to forcing new sailors to race against experienced crews based on their ratings rather than their skill levels, and forcing everyone who races with us to deal with massive handicap changes every week is not a good idea.

Thanks,

--Michael McKinsey

Mike, thanks for your comments and feedback.  I have a different opinion on the issues.  I would like for the racers to vote on the proposals.  If they agree with you that is OK with with me and I will race with what the majority wants to do.  PHRF does the best they can with handicaps and when the handicaps are close to each other it seems to work OK, but when there is a large spread in the handicaps I do not feel it works very well.  When other organizations schedule racing classes they seem to recognize this and group boats into classes based on their PHRF handicaps.  As far as adjustable handicaps go, the idea is to bring the corrected times closer together so that the slower boats have a chance to compete with the faster boats.  I understand how the faster boats may not like to lose to a slower boat but we need to give them a chance or they may quit racing.  Just my opinion on these issues.   Joe

I disagree completely, this is a bad idea and poorly thought out.  This would destroy the progress we are making to run more legitimate races, and I believe would alienate almost everyone.  The only complaints I received last year about the classes was too many adjustments in ratings in the A class from boats that should have been in the performance class, and they seemed to decide they would move there next season, and you not being able to find a class where you felt you were going to be happy with the results.  The overwhelming majority of participants are happy with the systems as they are, and I am sorry you have not had the results you wanted, but turning the entire race program upside down and demanding that everyone race the way you want to race and not give anybody any options in order to try to make you happy is not the answer.  We will deal with this at the meeting, I hope our actual racers who had a great year last year and spent so much time telling me how much they appreciated everything we have done show up and put this proposal to destroy our racing structure where it belongs.  I personally would not even be interested in racing in a race set up like this, and I know many people who feel the same way.  We are not interested in tiny classes with unlimited handicap adjustments.

Series 6 Race 5 Results

Last race of the year results!  Here they are - we had 20 boats out for the last race of the season.  We had little wind, and then that went away, so we drifted in and finished in the dark on shortened courses for all classes, but we got the last race in!

Thanks so much to everyone who helped make this season so incredibly fun for us all.  Thanks to the PMYC RC and all the people who help every week in the clubhouse and cleaning up.  We had our traditional 5th race steak dinner, with nice porterhouses and beak potatoes.

Please remember December 15th is the Holiday Party!  Stay tuned for more info and to RSVP.

Series 6 Race 4 Results

We had 18 boats out in very light wind which died down further after sunset.  We all raced shortened courses.  Our second to last dinner was the often requested stuffed peppers, we had a packed house.

Next week is the last race! Since it is the 5th week of the series, we will be having steaks.

Please make sure to check in here for information about the holiday party which will be at PMYC on December 15, we will need to have RSVP for the party, so please make sure to keep in touch here at the website as the date approaches.  We give out all the overall series trophies at the holiday party.

EDIT:  There was an error in the link to the PDF results file in the last post.  I am posting this again with the corrected link.

We had 19 boats start and 15 boats finish.  We had light wind which died down to nothing, we had many boats finishing in the complete darkness.  A and B class had shortened courses.  The Tuna was amazing - thanks Steve for catching it and providing it so we could cook it up.  Thanks to everyone who helps out with the race, the race committee, the PMYC members who help out behind the bar, everyone who helped by doing some dishes!   Thanks very much.  As the races and the party after are growing and growing we need more people to help out, so don't be shy the more people who help out the less work it is for everyone who does.

Here are the ratings for series 6 race 1.  All class A ratings are set back to base, and all A boats have been given non spin adjustments - if you want to use your spinnaker going around the break water let me know and I will take off the adjustment, but no spinnakers allowed inside the break water in this series, so I assumed everyone wanted to go non spin.
