MDRVMF Meeting Notes 10/10/17

Meeting Notes

10/10/17

Marina del Rey Venture MacGregor Fleet

Mike Diamond called the meeting to order at 8:02 at the PMYC.  Thanks to Mike McKinsey who, as a member of PMYC arranged for us to meet there. Thanks to Mike D for getting the food for the dinner.  As a treasurers note, the money collected for dinner came up short of the cost again.  We will have to increase the dinner to $5 next year.  The attendance was very small, perhaps due to the late notice of the meeting.

1.  The notes from the last meeting were read and approved.

2.  The Treasury report was that the fleet has $2288.48 in the bank account.  The treasurer also has $23.00 in cash not deposited yet.

3.  Race Report.  Three more races in Series 7.  Cross Fire is the committee boat for this series.  This is the last series for this year.

4.  Business, old and new.

It was reaffirmed that the December party will be held at Fu’s Palace on December 3rd at 6:00pm.  Format will be the same as in the past years.  If anyone needs more information, contact Mike Diamond or Joe Cowan.

Election of new officers was discussed.  Steve Klitzky and Mike Diamond have agreed to be co Commodores for 2018.  Mike McKinsey is Vice Commodore. Mike McKinsey will also be the Race Chair for 2018.  Adolf Liebe has volunteered to be Trophy Chair for 2018.  Joe Cowan offered to step down from the Secretary and Treasurers positions but no one in attendance wanted the jobs.  The offer is still open to anyone interested.  Mike McKinsey will continue as Web Master.  There are two inactive chairs.  The Cruise Chair and the Membership Chair.  Since they were inactive in 2017, perhaps they are not needed.  However, if anyone is interested please contact Mike D or Steve K.

The next business meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 16th at PMYC.

5.  Meeting was adjourned at 8:27.

VSTNT Races Series 7 Race 2 Results (Updated)

  last edited: Fri, 13 Oct 2017 07:35:42 -0700
UPDATE 3:  In tenths reported a time at the wrong finish line, then reported a second time and mentioned they had missed a buoy.  We have adjusted their time to some estimate and they have been adjusted to last place with 1 point for the race.

UPDATE 2: Our discussion of ratings has prompted a review of the ratings, most importantly Andiamo was found to have been racing at the wrong rating and the correction has caused a change in the order of finishes for this race in the A class (Andiamo won and is leading the A class for the series).  Please download the results again to get the most recent version.  I also updated handicaps for boats in the B fleet which did not change the outcome but changed some of the adjusted handicaps for next week.

UPDATE:  I inverted a couple of numbers in Sea Bear's time - corrections have been made it changed the outcome for Class A but did not change any of the handicaps for next week.

Nice wind tonight - a quick run around the cool slalom course.  Thanks Crossfire for hosting the series.  Was an incredible sunset!

@Gerald Sobel  I just use the numbers we get from PHRF - the issue of if your boat is rated fairly is an entirely different subject.  I imagine if you put new sails on your boat and painted the bottom it would go faster, but that would not change your PHRF (it made us go faster when we did that).  Handicap racing is imperfect, no matter what system we use someone will be better off than with another one, I am happy to explain why we do what we do for our race results, but why PHRF is rating your boat at one rating or another is above my pay grade.

Fleet Meeting at PMYC Tuesday Oct 10 After Race

The Marina del Rey Venture MacGregor Fleet

The bi monthly fleet meeting will be held at the Pacific Mariners Yacht Club on Tuesday October 10th after the VSTNT race.  Meeting time will be around 8:00 or as soon as the racers get in.  Sorry for the late notice.

Dinner will be Pizza.  Cost will be $4. and we will see if that covers it.  If not, we may have to increase it next year.

This is the last meeting before the Holiday party in December.

We need to elect officers for the fleet.  It would be great if some of you youngsters (less than 80 years old) would be willing to take over the positions.  I am more than willing to hand over the Treasurer and Secretary positions.

Hope to see you there.

Light air tonight, great new course!  Thanks, to Crossfire for taking on this series as the Race Committee boat.

We are going to have some minor changes upcoming to the sailing instructions, so please check in before next weeks race.

We are having some issues at the starts so I thought I would point out some important rules about the start.

Leeward boats coming up to the start are not required to give any room to windward boats, if a boat is able to come up to the starting mark and push you above the mark you must give way to the boat, and tack around to make your start, you cannot "barge" into the start by demanding room in order to start.  If there are other boats above you that are also barging into the start, you must call for them to move up or tack as well.  You are not entitled to keep a boat from coming up to the start, and you are not entitled to mark room at the start.  If your actions require a leeward boat to sail lower in order to avoid hitting you, you have committed a foul and must take two penalty turns as soon as possible (you must keep clear of all boats while making the penalty turns).

Here is an image and some text to clarify the rules at the start:

VSTNT Races Series 6 Race 5 Results

The Marina del Rey Venture MacGregor Fleet

We had a great series 6 - especially if you love sailing in the dark!

This week we had the lightest winds in a while for a Tuesday night, with much of the race spent trying to coax the boats to move at all in calm winds and many boats not making the finish line.  The sunset was exceptional, what a beautiful night.

Congrats to Sunshine for the tie with Crossfire for total number of points in the series, the tiebreaker goes to Joe - a solid competition in A fleet this series for first and second all series long.  Great sailing everyone!

Thanks to Lumme, Fairwind Yacht Club, and the great crew on Sundance for hosting this series.  They went all out to make the courses and the entire series as interesting as possible.  The get together on the Fairwind dock on Tuesday night was really fun and I think I speak for everyone who attended when I say, well done and thank you!

Crossfire will be hosting series 7 - I will post the SI shortly, looks like it is going to be fun!

Just curious, what is the tie breaker calculation.  Both had 2 first, 2 seconds and 1 third.  Total corrected time?
Sunshine.
Michael McKinsey

Schedule A tie breakers for high score races uses the highest number in results,  if that is tied then it goes to the next one.  In this case you both had 6-5-5 so it was the next race down that went 5-4 that gave crossfire the tie break.  Hard for it to be much closer than that.

Still no information on the J24 that raced, but looks like everyone else is in so I will call these final unless I get more information.  If anyone has information on the J24, boat name etc. let me know.

We will call it 17 boats out in light air, we had a shortened course for all classes.  Remember to monitor channel 71 during the race for updates to the course especially in light air (but this time of the year this is a long course so always pay attention).

18 boats out tonight, quite nice wind, was a fun run around the course.  The days are getting shorter, but we got around the full course tonight though some of us are certainly finishing with running lights on!

Thanks race committee we got all the times they have a new radio we hear and all went well.

As always let us know if anything needs correcting.

EDIT: Results are final as of 9:43 on September 1, 2017 - I had left over spin adjustments from the first race of last series in PHRF - I believe they are gone now and ratings should be correct (there is no longer any adjustments in PHRF I had the base ratings incorrect because they had been adjusted for the first race last series).  Did not make any changes in A or B fleet in this revision.

We had light wind, I believe we had 21 boats out total.  Most made it around with the shortened course finishing at the extension to the south side of the detached breakwall.

There was some confusion with the course for B class, the RC announced that G and J are rounding marks (keep to port).  This requires each boat in B class to round J rather than just keep it to port on the way to G.  This was the intention of the RC to have us round J, the course is quite dynamic with the classes all criss crossing each other, so keep a good watch out and enjoy the variety in courses.  I believe everyone in the B class sailed this course as intended (rounded J and G to port).

I think I have the all of the times now, but we had many corrections and adjustments so please double check your time.  RC seemed to have some radio problems during part of the course getting finish times, I think the break wall might have been between them and the finishers trying to mark.  If there is anyone who may be interested in recording times as well, we might benefit from having two different boats taking down the times as people mark (especially if there is no confirmation from the RC).  Sorry for the delays in getting the results out we had a lot of information to gather this week.

Thanks to Sundance for all the work as RC for series 6!

I wanted to mention again the free and quite useful program RaceQs.  If you turn a RaceQ track on, you can get your exact time as well as see the other boats that have their trackers on in in a 3d replay of the race.  We usually track our races, and it is a great tool.  I will include a link at the bottom of this post.

EDIT: Results are final as of 8:00 on August 17, 2017.  Sorry for the delay on getting the PHRF results out, a massive conspiracy of unfortunate circumstances made the delays inevitable - there was blame on many sides (just kidding it was all me).  Please let me know if anything else needs updating.

Lighter winds tonight, but enough so everyone made it across the finish line before 8.  Looks like we had 15 boats total.

I am waiting on times from Mistral and Twelve Bar Blues, so PHRF is very provisional, we know they finished before the other boats but the RC missed the times and nobody else jotted them down, so I will update as soon as I get the times.

A and B class I believe I got everyone so that is enough to update the handicaps, and everything should be final for those classes, let me know if you see anything that needs correcting.  We have a lot of boats in striking distance of the series in B class, we are all chasing Shpritz who has a 2 point lead in the B class going into the final race, it is all coming down to the final race again.

Class A we have the usual suspect in 1st with Joe and the ever capable crew on Crossfire beating the field to bits (at least someone beat him in one race!), but the race for second in the series has lots of boats in contention going into the last race.

UPDATE: Results are final as of 12:58 on August 10, 2017  Had the wrong finish time for Andiamo.  Updates have been made and everything corrected including next week handicaps for A class.

Great wind for the drag race out to 2ES and back!  Lots of shake ups in the finish positions tonight, not the usual suspects on the leader boards.  Everyone is getting better, this is a fun course with wind like tonight, full speed ahead!

We had a great meeting at PMYC after the race and the next meeting is scheduled again at PMYC for Tuesday October 10 after the race.  Thanks to PMYC for allowing us to meet there, I think everyone enjoyed being able to get back to the chicken dinner tradition, thanks to Mike Diamond for bringing the chicken.

Sundance and Fairwind Yacht Club will be Race Committee series 6, thanks to Adolf and the great crew on Might as Well for doing such a great job serving as Race Committee for series 5.  As always, let us know if anything needs adjusting or correcting.

MDRVMF Fleet Meeting Tuesday August 8 - 8PM - PMYC

The Marina del Rey Venture MacGregor Fleet

Forwarding from Joe:

The Fleet is having its bi-monthly meeting next Tuesday evening.  It will be at the Pacific Mariners Yacht Club on Panay Way.  It will start around 8pm as soon as the racers can get to the club.  Please RSVP to Mike McKinney so we will know how much food to have available.  Mike's phone is 760-475-2959, his email is mmc1800@gmail.com.  Mike says a text message is a good way to contact him, but a phone call or email will also work.

A chicken dinner is planned for the usual $4 charge.

Non fleet members are welcome.  A few of my crew said they plan to attend.

We plan to talk about scheduling some social events.  Something like Vic's second Sunday sail and dock pot luck has some appeal.  We might be able to do the pot luck on the PMYC guest dock for example.  All ideas are welcome.

Joe
