Hi All,
Here are the provisional ratings for series 0 race 2. There are some complications with this week, because we have boats that are switching classes between the races. This does not matter for any awards because there are no awards in series 0, but I had to decide what to do with ratings adjustments, and I decided to include their finishes in the calculations for everyone else, but to leave the boats at their base rating when they show up in the new class. This also has those boats that are changing being listed in both classes, there was not a way for me to move them without messing up the results from the previous races, so for a series where a boat changes classes mid series I need to have 2 records for that boat in the database, in theory I will remember to remove the extra record when we start the next series.
The Capris 22s, Sundance and Star World are moving from A to B, and Liquid Life is moving from B to A, so they will be racing in their new classes with base ratings for week 2.
Race 2 provisional ratings:
Race 0-2 ratings HTML FileI have set up the new worksheets for the ratings adjustments and here are links to them so you can see how this calculation is done, these links are to the google docs spreadsheets:
#^Calc Handicap B 2018 TNT Races#^Calc Handicap A 2018 TNT RacesThe above links should work all year, as I will be modifying those documents each week to make the calculations, so if you are wondering how I got the new ratings for a particular week you can always check on these spreadsheets. Usually I will be doing the next weeks ratings on Wednesday or Thursday and I plan to post them so we have time to get the ratings adjusted before we sail the next race if there are any issues. Once the race is calculated with a rating we will not be recalculating old races if it turns out there is some issue with your rating. The posted rating at the time I publish the results as final is going to be the last time we make ratings adjustments for that race, so at the very latest talk to me after the race before I post results at PMYC if you need to get your rating straight for that race. Too many calculations and adjustments are made with the finish times to be retroactively changing the ratings once we have final results and I am going to be erroring on the side of not making any adjustments to posted results this year, so the earlier you point out a problem the better otherwise whatever is wrong will be fixed for next week. We have enough issues getting finish times for the races correct, I am not going to also be worrying about ratings once we are posting results.
We have a new ratings adjustment worksheet for boats that do not have PHRF Corinthian ratings already - if you have an official PHRF ratings in the database for your boat, we will be using that so you do not need to fill out this form (print out the form and hand it to me, or fill it out an email it to me, or take a picture of it with your phone and text it to me, or whatever other way works for you to get me this information):
Ratings WorksheetThe most important thing - YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE TO CHECK THE RATINGS - please check your ratings and those of your competitors and let me know if there are problems. I am happy to make adjustments and move the ratings to where they belong, but I cannot go through all the ratings for every boat every week, so please make sure to point out anything you see that needs adjusting.
What is staying the same as last year is a maximum adjustment of 15 seconds for A fleet and 20 seconds for B fleet for each race.
The purpose of these new calculations is to create max adjustments at the ends of the fleets, high and low with graduated adjustments in between. This is done by taking the deviation in seconds from the average time, and dividing it by a division factor that is the highest number it can be for that particular race without creating too many maximum adjustments in the race (this number will change from week to week depending on the variation from average in the fleets). This gives us the desired effect of having maximum adjustments only existing for the extreme ends of the fleet, where last years adjustments gave us the maximum adjustment for almost every boat above or below average which created a situation where the boats usually above average and the boats usually below average where not be adjusted at all relative to one another for most races.
Also different for this year, the handicap adjustments will persist across the series for the B class, and be reset to base ratings every series for the A fleet. This will allow boats in the B fleet to find their levels and stay there across the season, while A class boats will be required to sail closer to their actual base ratings. I am going to keep the adjustments from series 0 heading into series 1, so B fleet boats are already starting to set their handicaps for the season.
Also, for calculating the results and doing the reports we are using a great open source free program called Sail Wave. You can download the program at
http://www.sailwave.com - I also will provide the database file we are using, so you can see what is in the database and run the reports yourself if you like (or run other reports I am not publishing). I post the database file for every race in the files section here on the website, the files have .blw extensions and usually I upload the latest file for my own records when I make changes. I leave the old file when I upload a new one for the next race, so you can always go back and see what the state of the database was used to calculate the results. Usually I upload the changes I make in any session working on the file when I publish something to the website. You can see the file list at
