There's Another Internet Running Right Now

Most people think of the internet as a single thing — one big network that Google, Meta, and Amazon more or less run the show on. But that's not really how it works, and it's definitely not how it has to work.

Right now, running quietly underneath the mainstream web, there are thousands of independently operated servers, mesh radio nodes, and peer-to-peer communication systems that collectively form something that looks a lot like a parallel internet. It doesn't have a snappy brand name. There's no Super Bowl ad for it. But it's real, it's growing, and it operates by fundamentally different rules than the platforms you use every day.

This isn't science fiction. It's infrastructure — and it's worth understanding.

ActivityPub: The Protocol That's Already Eaten More Than You Think

Let's start with what's probably the most mature piece of this parallel stack: ActivityPub, the open protocol that powers the Fediverse. If you've heard of Mastodon, you've brushed up against it. But Mastodon is just one application riding on top of a much bigger idea.

ActivityPub is a W3C-standardized protocol that lets independently operated servers talk to each other using a common language. Your account on one server can follow, reply to, and interact with accounts on completely different servers run by completely different people. No central company owns the network. No single point of failure can take the whole thing down.

As of 2024, there are well over ten million active accounts across Fediverse platforms — Mastodon, Misskey, Calckey, Pixelfed for photos, PeerTube for video, Bookwyrm for book lovers, and dozens of others. Each of those platforms runs on independently hosted servers, many of them operated by regular people paying out of pocket or running small community fundraisers to keep the lights on.

When Threads launched with ActivityPub compatibility, it was a tacit acknowledgment from Meta that this protocol matters. That's not nothing.

Mesh Networks: The Version That Doesn't Need the ISPs at All

Federated servers are cool, but they still rely on the traditional internet for connectivity. Mesh networks take the parallel internet concept a step further by routing around the physical infrastructure that corporations and governments control.

Projects like Meshtastic — which uses affordable LoRa radio hardware you can buy for under $40 — let people create off-grid communication networks that can span miles without a single internet connection involved. NYC Mesh has been quietly building a community-owned wireless network across New York City for years, providing real broadband to neighborhoods that the big ISPs have chronically underserved.

GoTenna, Althea, and similar projects are experimenting with mesh architectures where users literally become nodes in the network, routing traffic for their neighbors in exchange for micropayments or just community goodwill. In rural areas where Comcast decided your zip code wasn't profitable enough, these aren't hobbyist experiments — they're actual infrastructure.

During natural disasters, these networks have proven their value repeatedly. When Hurricane Maria knocked out Puerto Rico's conventional infrastructure in 2017, mesh and peer-to-peer radio networks kept some communities connected when nothing else could.

Blockchain-Backed Communication: Overhyped, But Not Useless

Okay, we have to talk about the blockchain angle, because it keeps coming up and the discourse around it is a mess.

Yes, a lot of "decentralized" communication projects built on blockchain tech have been vaporware, exit scams, or just deeply impractical. The crypto winter of 2022 took a lot of them out. Fair enough.

But strip away the token speculation and there are some genuinely interesting infrastructure ideas here. Nostr — a simple, open protocol for decentralized social networking — uses cryptographic key pairs to give users portable identities that no platform can revoke. Your identity lives in your keys, not in a company's database. Jack Dorsey has funded development on it. It's not perfect, but the core idea of cryptographically self-sovereign identity is sound.

Session, a messaging app that routes through a decentralized node network (similar in concept to Tor but with a different economic model), offers metadata-resistant communication without requiring a phone number or email address to sign up. It's not as seamless as iMessage, but it's not trying to be.

The honest take: blockchain-adjacent tools are most useful for specific privacy and identity problems, not as a wholesale replacement for how the internet works.

The Sustainability Problem Nobody Wants to Talk About

Here's where we have to get real, because cheerleading without acknowledging the hard parts isn't useful.

The federated internet has a money problem. Running servers costs real money. Moderation costs time and emotional labor. Most Fediverse instance admins are volunteers or are running small Patreon campaigns to cover hosting bills. That's admirable, but it doesn't scale the same way venture capital does.

Mastodon's flagship instance, mastodon.social, has had recurring funding crunches. Smaller instances go dark all the time, sometimes taking years of user posts with them — which is its own kind of platform death, just distributed. The promise of the federated web is that your data doesn't disappear when a company implodes, but if your specific server shuts down and you didn't export your data, you're still in trouble.

There's also the moderation challenge. Decentralization means there's no central authority to kick off bad actors — which is philosophically appealing until a harassment campaign targets your community and you realize your tiny volunteer mod team is the only thing standing between you and chaos. Some instances have handled this remarkably well. Others have become cesspools. The variance is huge.

So Is This Actually Going Somewhere?

The parallel internet isn't going to replace Google next Tuesday. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

But the framing of "niche vs. mainstream" might be the wrong lens entirely. The early web was niche. Email was niche. The question isn't whether a billion people are using ActivityPub right now — they're not. The question is whether the infrastructure is sound enough to matter when people need it.

And increasingly, people do need it. Every time a platform gets acquired and immediately enshittified, every time a terms-of-service change wipes out a community, every time a government demands user data and a company complies without a fight — more people start looking for the exit.

The parallel internet isn't waiting for those people. It's already running. The servers are up. The protocols are documented. The communities exist.

What it needs is more people who understand that owning your identity and controlling your network isn't just a philosophical stance — it's a practical choice you can make right now, with tools that actually work.

The matrix within the matrix is real. You just have to know where to look.
