Let's start with a number that should make you uncomfortable: $131.9 billion. That's roughly how much Meta made in advertising revenue in 2023. Not from selling gadgets. Not from subscription fees. From you — your habits, your relationships, your 2 a.m. doom-scrolling sessions, your political opinions, your health anxieties, and yes, even the messages you thought were private.

The business model of mainstream social media has always been straightforward, even if it's rarely stated plainly: give people a free platform, collect everything they do on it, and sell that behavioral data to advertisers who want to influence what those people buy, believe, and vote for. It's a surveillance economy dressed up in friendly UX design, and most of us have been living inside it for so long that it just feels... normal.

It isn't normal. And a growing movement of developers, activists, and everyday users is building something fundamentally different.

What "Data Collection" Actually Looks Like in Practice

When people hear "data collection," they tend to picture something abstract — a server somewhere storing their birthday and email address. The reality is far more invasive.

Facebook, for instance, tracks users across the entire internet through its invisible pixel technology, embedded on millions of third-party websites. Even if you've never had a Facebook account, the company has likely built a "shadow profile" on you based on data harvested from sites you've visited. Instagram analyzes not just what you post, but how long you pause on specific content, which direction you scroll, and even the brightness setting on your phone screen.

Google's data collection is arguably even more comprehensive. Between Gmail, Search, Maps, YouTube, Chrome, and Android, the company has a near-complete picture of your daily life — where you go, what you read, who you communicate with, and what you buy. That data feeds into ad-targeting algorithms capable of identifying personal traits like political affiliation, pregnancy status, mental health struggles, and sexual orientation with unsettling accuracy.

Then there's the third-party sharing problem. A 2023 investigation by the Electronic Frontier Foundation found that major platforms routinely share sensitive user data with data brokers — companies most Americans have never heard of — who then resell that information to employers, insurers, law enforcement agencies, and political campaigns. Your data doesn't just live in one place. It ripples outward across an entire ecosystem of buyers.

The Architecture of Control

The surveillance model isn't just a privacy issue — it's a power issue. When a single corporation controls the infrastructure through which billions of people communicate, it also controls the rules of that communication.

Platforms can — and do — change their algorithms without notice, throttling the reach of certain voices while amplifying others. They can ban users, delete content, or lock accounts with limited transparency or recourse. They can comply with government data requests, sometimes in bulk, without notifying the users whose information was handed over. The centralized architecture that makes these platforms efficient is the same architecture that makes them dangerous.

This is the core problem that decentralized social platforms are designed to solve.

How Decentralized Networks Work Differently

The philosophical shift here is significant. Instead of one company owning the servers, the software, and the rules, decentralized networks distribute that power across many independently operated nodes — often called "instances" or "servers" — run by individuals, nonprofits, universities, and community organizations.

The Fediverse — a loose federation of interconnected platforms including Mastodon, Pixelfed, and PeerTube — operates on open protocols like ActivityPub. This means a user on one server can follow and interact with users on completely different servers, in the same way that a Gmail user can email someone on a Yahoo account. No single company owns the network. No single entity can surveil the whole thing.

Platforms like Nostr take a different approach, building decentralization directly into the cryptographic identity layer. Your identity on Nostr is tied to a cryptographic key pair that you control, not an account that a corporation can suspend or delete. Lose your login credentials on Twitter, and you lose your account. On Nostr, your identity lives in a key that belongs to you.

Then there are platforms like RedMatrix and its successor ecosystem, which have long championed the idea that your social graph — your connections, your content, your history — should be portable, self-hosted, and under your control. The technical term is "nomadic identity," and it's a genuinely radical concept: the idea that your online presence should follow you, not be held hostage by any particular platform.

The Business Model Question

Skeptics often ask: if these platforms don't sell ads, how do they survive? It's a fair question. The honest answer is that decentralized networks operate on a variety of models — community donations, crowdfunding through platforms like Patreon or Open Collective, small server hosting fees, and in some cases, grants from digital rights organizations.

This isn't as financially precarious as it sounds. Many Mastodon instances, for example, run on a few hundred dollars a month in hosting costs, funded by small recurring donations from their user base. The absence of a profit motive isn't a bug — it's the feature. When your platform doesn't need to maximize engagement to sell ads, it doesn't need to deploy anxiety-inducing algorithmic feeds designed to keep you scrolling at the expense of your mental health.

Privacy as a Feature, Not an Afterthought

Decentralized platforms tend to collect dramatically less data by design. When you run your own server — or use one run by a trusted community — there's no centralized corporation hoovering up your behavioral data. Encryption is often built into the communication layer. And because the software is typically open source, anyone can audit the code to verify that it does what it claims.

This isn't a guarantee of perfect privacy. Server administrators can still see data passing through their nodes. No technology is completely bulletproof. But the default posture of these platforms is fundamentally different: they start from the assumption that your data belongs to you, rather than treating your privacy as an obstacle to monetization.

The Bigger Picture

The surveillance economy didn't emerge because tech companies are uniquely evil. It emerged because a specific set of business incentives, regulatory failures, and user habits created the conditions for it to thrive. Changing that requires more than switching apps — it requires a different conception of what the internet is for.

Decentralized platforms represent that different conception. They're not perfect, and they're not always as polished as their corporate counterparts. But they're built on a premise that mainstream social media abandoned long ago: that the people using a network should be the ones who own it.
